What Is Masonry?

Masonry is one method used for building homes and structures. It is the building of a structure by binding together individual units with a mortar. Masonry is known for being a highly durable method of construction.

Materials commonly used for masonry buildings are brink, stone, limestone, marble, concrete block, glass block, cast stone and tile. The use of these types of materials can increase the thermal mass of a masonry building, which is one of the advantages. Most types of masonry will not require painting, which means less life cycle costs for the building. Good fire protection is provided by masonry construction, being very heat resistant. Masonry structures are also sturdy and more resistant to flying debris and other projectiles.

But as with any other material, there are a few disadvantages to using masonry. This is especially seen in extreme weather areas, where frost damage can occur to masonry walls causing degradation, though this is rare with concrete block. A masonry structure will require a very sturdy foundation due to it’s large weight. Masonry also requires more skilled labour rather than machines to be built, with the exception of concrete.

Masonry can be a very suitable material to build a home from and comes with it’s advantages and disadvantages. If you are planning to build a new home, ask us if a masonry home is right for you.

Builders of the Dotcom mansion

New Zealand’s Largest Mansion in Coatesville.

2004 New Zealand’s largest and most expensive home is the 30 million dollar mansion located in Coatesville Auckland. This magnificent property was built using AAC Hebel Supercrete Solid Block, Commercial & Industrial Wall and Structural Flooring Systems installed by Unique Homes . Many parts of the construction used a twin skin technique, using CIWS panels strapped to a steel portal skeleton on the exterior with a cavity and then CIWS panels as an internal lining giving the wall a 600mm thickness.

As you can see from the images (coming soon) Unique Homes director, Philipp Ripa, himself and his team worked and moulded the Hebel to create many of the buildings intricate design features i.e. spiral volutes to arched ceilings, curved scotias, spiral staircases, curved walls, fire surrounds, window banding and much more. This resulted in unparalleled acoustic and thermal insulation properties.

British couple Richard and Ruth Bradley, who emigrated to New Zealand in 1993 wanted a “Traditional English country home”. The couple were the founders of Christmas hamper company “Chrisco” The four-storey home, which sits on 22.26ha on Mahoenui Valley Rd North of Albany and covers 4459 square metres, took four years to build.
Philipp Ripa says “He, as the director of Unique Homes, is proud of his teams achievement and says that although there where huge challenges along the way it was an honor to be involved with the development and they look forward to their next big project.”

Herald quoted April 2012-“The wealthiest overseas billionaire, Alexander Abramov, to arrive on our shores lately is building a house to rival New Zealand’s most expensive, Chrisco’s Mansion.”

Once again Unique Homes is proud to be involved in New Zealands next largest Mansion. The project is under wraps and the Director of Unique Homes, Philipp Ripa, has his lips sealed – So we have to watch the space.
